City of Redmond’s Poultry Predictor is ready for its 4th year! And, this time, it’s a 5K at Redmond’s Central Connector Park. What’s unique about the race? It’s not just the fastest who win (though there is a non-predicted race this year) but the closest to guessing their own finishing time! We got a chance to chat with Race Director, Sarah Sandquist, about what to expect for this year’s event. Check it out!
Tell us about the Poultry Predictor. What, when and where is it? Redmond Poultry Predictor is a 5K run/walk with a unique twist. At the time of registration, participants predict their finish time. There are no clocks, gps, timing devices allowed on the course, and the five closet to their predicted finish time win! There is a time limit of 45 minutes and 100 people for the Predictor division. Additionally, we also offering a 5K non-predicted division. In this division, participants can use timing devices and the top male/female in each age group will win awards.
What to can participants expect to see and do? Participants can expect a flat course through downtown Redmond, on our new Central Connector Trail!
What do you consider to be the best part about the race? There are lots of Thanksgiving themed races, but ours has the fun twist that you don’t have to be the fastest to win! In our first year, the closest predicted time came from an 11 year old girl who had never run a race before. Her predicted time was only .09 off her finish time!
How many participants do you expect for the race and how long has it been around? We expect around 300 runners.
How long has the Poultry Predictor been around? This is our 4th year.
Does the Poultry Predictor benefit any charitable organizations? We are excited to support a local charity, Open Kitchen. Every Wednesday evening from 5pm – 7pm, Open Kitchen serves a free, warm, and nutritious meal to anyone who walks through their door. A richly diverse community made up of lonely seniors, homeless young adults, large families on a tight budget, immigrants learning to navigate their new world, the working poor, and those who want to “give back”, Open Kitchen has fed over 1,500 guests and generated over 2,000 volunteer hours since their launch on November 20, 2013.
Do you organize other events as well? If so, which ones? Yes! We try to add a fun twist to our races. Here are the next ones coming up next!
Every 2nd and 4th Wednesdays we host the Grass Lawn 5K Series — a series of affordable, chip-timed weekly 5K runs at Grass Lawn Park geared to get you in shape all season long.
On April 18, 2015, we will host the Scrambled Egg 5K! Empty eggs are scattered all over the course and each color is a time addition or deduction, but it’s a secret! Run straight through, or try for your “best” time by picking up eggs.
Anything else you’d like to share with the Gametiime community? Online registration closes 11/12! See you on the 16th! Fee increases to $40 onsite. Both divisions include a long-sleeve technical fabric shirt, goody bag from participating vendors, and donation to Open Kitchen.
