Races of Gametiime: MoveMMORE Seattle 5K & 1 Mile Run/Walk rallies support for multiple myeloma cancer research

Magnuson Park will play host to an awesome race at the end of this month, the MoveMMORE Seattle 5K and 1 Mile Run/Walk! The event will be a family-friendly event open to runners and walkers of all abilities. It’s mission: to bring the community together in support of multiple myeloma cancer research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. As such, all proceeds including registration fees, will go directly to the cause.

We got a chance to chat with this year’s event director and ask her a few questions.

As with other races we’ve featured, we’d like to first highlight the primary reason we, and many others, will be participating in MoveMMORE Seattle this year — the quest for a cure for multiple myeloma.

So who’s behind MoveMMORE Seattle? Multiple Myeloma Opportunities for Research & Education (MMORE) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to raising awareness and funds for multiple myeloma cancer research. MMORE was founded by Nancy Kaufmann and Steve Fink, after their daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2005 at the age of 22. Sarah is now in remission, but remission is not a cure and there is a high rate of recurrence. The good news? Research is advancing treatments rapidly. Since 2005, survival rates have doubled from 2-4 years to 4-10 years. The next generation of treatments is in development, but funding is desperately needed to move those treatments through the research stage and make them available to patients.

We as runners know the meaning of continuous progress and achieving goals. MoveMMORE Seattle is a fantastic opportunity for us to help increase momentum for this great cause.

Tell us about MoveMMORE Seattle. What, when and where is it? MoveMMORE Seattle is a 5K and 1 mile run/walk on June 30th at Magnuson Park in Seattle, WA. Participants are invited to run or walk a 5K or 1-mile route in support of multiple myeloma cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

What to can participants expect to see and do?
Besides getting good exercise while enjoying a beautiful view of Lake Washington and Magnuson Park, this first annual event will have a Movin’ 92.5 DJ to keep us pumped-up, respected CNBC Hong Kong TV Host and News Anchor Bernie Lo as our M.C., lots of post-race snacks, and great prizes for the biggest team, best “team theme” (think funky name and cool costumes!), top individual fundraiser, and top 3 overall 5K finishers.

What do you consider to be the best part about MoveMMORE Seattle?
MoveMMORE Seattle is a fun event and a great way to spend a Sunday morning outside in a beautiful city park. But more than that, MoveMMORE Seattle allows you to support an important cause. Thanks to our generous sponsors, 100% of funds raised at this event—including registration costs—will be donated directly to multiple myeloma cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow. Over 60,000 Americans are living with multiple myeloma, and 20,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. There is currently no cure for this disease, and average lifespan from diagnosis is 6-10 years. We are working to change that statistic, won’t you join us?

How long has the MoveMMORE Seattle 5K been around? This is our first annual MoveMMORE Seattle event. The MoveMMORE event was started in Columbus, OH where the 6th annual run/walk just welcomed over 650 participants!

Does the MoveMMORE Seattle 5K benefit any charitable organizations? If so, which ones? MMORE: Multiple Myeloma Opportunities for Research & Education is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization started in 2008 as one family’s way to deal with this devastating diagnosis. Since that time the organization has grown to a community of thousands affected by this cancer and their supporters, and has donated over $1.3 million to myeloma research.

In recognition of the outstanding and cutting-edge research being done in the area of multiple myeloma at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 100% of all funds raised at MoveMMORE Seattle will directly support research conducted locally at “The Hutch”.

Do you organize other events as well? If so, which ones? MMORE hosts fundraising and educational events in cities around the country in support of multiple myeloma cancer research and we encourage grassroots participation! For more information please email info@mmore.org.

Anything else you’d like to share with the Gametiime community? Beautiful location, good exercise, noble cause, great tunes, plenty of food, and fun prizes—what more could you ask for? Lace up those shoes and join us on June 30th!
