We had the privilege of connecting with Teri Smith, Director of Communications and Camaraderie for the Cascade Lakes Race Group, the organization that runs the acclaimed Cascade Lakes Relay and Spokane to Sandpoint Relay. In this race feature, we will focus on the 6th Annual Spokane to Sandpoint Relay, one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier running events. This year, the S2S will introduce a 139-mile walk relay to pair with its 200-mile run relay adventure.

Tell us about the Spokane to Sandpoint Relay. What, when and where is it? The Spokane to Sandpoint Relay is a 200-mile team relay for runners, or a 139-mile team relay for walkers, like the Hood to Coast. The race begins on Mt. Spokane, winds down to Couer d’Alene (including 60 miles on the Centennial Trail), and then heads north to finish in Sandpoint on the beautiful beach of Lake Pend Oreille.
What to can participants expect to see and do? Runners and walkers alike can expect a well organized, fun, and friendly relay event with tons of opportunities to act silly, run hard, and create lasting friendships.
What do you consider to be the best part about the Spokane to Sandpoint Relay? Running a relay with eleven of your friends is a unique experience. You run through the night, bond with the other teams, and experience running as a team sport. Among overnight relay races, this course is unique in that so much of it is on paved trail (off the road) and along water. The combination of beautiful course, a professional event, high quality shirts, and medals — and a rockin’ finish line — make this race a favorite annual event!
How many participants do you expect for the race? Last year, we had about 70 teams participate. We are hoping to grow that number this year to about 100 teams, or 1,200 runners and walkers.
How long has the Spokane to Sandpoint Relay been around? This is the sixth year for the Spokane to Sandpoint Relay and the second year that the Cascade Lakes Race Group has produced it. The CLRG also puts on the acclaimed Cascade Lakes Relay in Central Oregon, which is also in its sixth year and sells out in less than a week every year.
Does the Spokane to Sandpoint Relay benefit any charitable organizations? If so, which ones? We make a concerted effort to work with the non-profits in the areas the race runs through. Each team is required to provide volunteers, but they have the option of “hiring” those volunteers from local charities. As a result, we donate approximately $40,000 per year to local charities.
Anything else you’d like to share with the Gametiime community? We are a small, family-run business with the mission to provide exceptional race experiences while supporting the communities we run and walk through. We prioritize rural courses, local vendors & businesses, personal relationships, and supporting local non-profits. We give our heart and soul to bring you a safe, well-organized, and FUN event that you’ll remember forever.
